![]() It was during my time at Fort Benning, Georgia, that this technique first came to my awareness. One of the techniques that I picked up in my military career was to have a personal land navigation kit in your rucksack as part of your packing list. Our sergeants prohibit the use of GPS devices during individual training on land navigation. An essential element of this task is training individual soldiers, Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) to be proficient at land navigation with a map, compass, and map protractor. Navigation over familiar and unfamiliar terrain in all types of weather conditions during daylight or evening hours makes our military a formidable force. Army has a vested interest in the vital skill of moving on the battlefield. To learn more please see the GeoJPG website.įor more information about GISsurfer, please visit the GISsurfer homepage.įor a short description of my other projects see the MappingSupport project page.Have you ever heard about how to create a tactical land navigation kit? Land navigation is critical to emergency wilderness survival. You can then use the GeoJPG web app (I am the developer) to install the JPGs on your phone or tablet and view those JPGs as an *offline* map with geolocation and the MGRS grid turned on. MGRS and USNG are the same except MGRS is often written without spaces. The JPG/PNG files can show almost any data that GISsurfer can display. ![]() The videos that I am still working on will walk you though that process. The short story is that feature will let you make georeferenced JPG and PNG files which you can import into ATAK as part of a KMZ file. New for 2023: There are now some tutorial videos to help you learn about GISsurfer. For a description of all the features of GISsurfer that support MGRS coordinates (search, geolocation, etc) and links to USNG/MGRS videos plus other educational material, please download the USNG and MGRS Coordinates pdf file. The map is displayed by GISsurfer which is a general purpose web map based on the Leaflet map API (Application Program Interface). This map with a MGRS grid will work in most browsers on most devices including cell phones.
